Viral video: Many shocked to learn the horrifying way Gummy Bears are made

Did you know that gummy bears, one of America's most popular junk food candies, are made in part from gelatin? Though a common ingredient in food, gelatin may not be what you think it is.

A colorless, odorless and tasteless substance, gelatin is found in many candies, including candy corn, trifles, gelatin desserts and items such as gummy bears, peeps, jelly babies, fruit snacks, marshmallows, ice cream and yogurt, according to New Health Advisor.

The ingredient is not limited to food, either, as it is also used in photography, pharmaceutical drugs and the manufacturing of cosmetics. Many of you may not realize it, but gelatin is made from boiling the tendons, cartilage, skin and bones of animals.

Common ingredient in candies and desserts made from chopped up animal parts

"It is usually obtained from pigs or cows, but the gelatin in Jell-O is almost always from pigskin," as is depicted in a video which has since gone viral, showing the process of how gummy bears are made.

The contents used to make gelatin are usually retrieved from slaughterhouses. The process begins by inspecting animal parts for quality, before chopping them up into usable pieces. Then, as the video shows, these pieces are washed with high-pressure sprays before being soaked in hot water to degrease.

This, in turn, reduces the fat content to about 2 percent. The animal parts are then moved to an industrial dryer where they are roasted at 200 degrees Fahrenheit.

How gelatin is made

In order to eliminate bacteria, the animal parts are soaked in a form of acid for five days, which helps release the collagen. The bones, skin and tissue are then boiled so that "workers can draw off the liquid using a tube that runs from the extractor.

"The liquid then moves through filters to separate tissue, bone, and skin that may still be there. The liquid then moves to the evaporators where it is separated from the solid gelatin. It then moves to the next machine where it is pressed into sheets. Sometimes, it is passed through a grinder to turn into a fine powdery form."

Finally, the ingredient is flavored or colored before being added to your favorite foods. Now, do the aforementioned foods still sound appetizing to you? Probably not.

While the process of making gelatin is less than appealing, the ingredient is said to have many health benefits. For one, it's known for its remarkable ability to heal the skin due to the fact that it's rich in collagen.

The health benefits of gelatin

It helps keep skin elastic, as well as renew skin cells, according to Grass Fed Girl. "Gelatin makes up the connective tissues of the skin that are responsible for giving skin its strength and firmness."

Taking gelatin orally can do wonders for the skin. But not all gelatin is the same. Healthy food cannot come from unhealthy animals, says Grass Fed Girl.

Therefore, when using gelatin you should look for information showing that the product was made from grass-fed livestock and not factory farmed animals, as they are much more sick and unhealthy as a result of living in confined, overcrowded and dirty spaces.

Ingesting a healthy version of gelatin supports "youthful-looking, resilient skin." In addition to preventing and reducing wrinkles, gelatin is also good for your teeth, hair and nails due to its nutrient-rich minerals.

Gelatin can also help prevent stretch marks and cellulite, as well as help detox the liver, because it's rich in glycine, crucial for good liver health.

The ingredient can also aid in weight loss and digestion, while supporting strong, healthy bones and reducing arthritis.

Jimmy Kimmel Stares In Horror When James Corden Starts Singing In The Car

When you have somewhere important to be, make sure you have a responsible ride!

There is nothing worse than hurrying around because your ride fell through. I guess Jimmy Kimmel hasn’t gotten that memo yet. On his way to host the 68th Emmy Awards, Jimmy managed to jump from car to car because his rides just didn’t work out.

The late night TV host first got a ride from Malcolm Jamal Warner in an OJ Simpson-style white Bronco, but then he wound up getting picked up by the cast of Modern Family.

When their car went up in flames because of a magic trick gone wrong, another late night host came to save the day. James Corden pulled up in his classic “Carpool Karaoke” style.

Except, Jimmy Kimmel wasn’t really feeling it. He apparently “doesn’t sing”, but that doesn’t last long. How can you not sing along to Wham! It’s impossible.

It wouldn’t be a traditional Emmys opening sketch if Jimmy Kimmel didn’t pack it full of stars! After a fight with James, Jimmy gets kicked out of the car and winds up with Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s Veep character.

But the real kicker of the night is Jimmy riding in style to the awards show on the back of a dragon with Daenerys Targaryen! Which celebrity cameo did you like the best?

Man Begins 648-Mile Walk To The White House To Raise Awareness For Homeless People

The phrase “you can talk the talk, but can you walk the walk?” hasn’t held a lot of meaning to me until now.

There are many fundraiser walks around the world that raise awareness for different societal and health issues, like the Susan G. Komen walk to find a cure for breast cancer.

For Terence Lester, he has done more than just walk the walk. He has endured true pain to prove his dedication to a cause.

Terence started his mission from his home in Atlanta, Georgia and he plans to walk all 648 miles to the White House, in Washington D.C. My feet just ache thinking about that walk!

“When I think about homeless individuals who come to our offices, who need to wash their clothes because they’ve been kicked out of places because people were dehumanizing them… this is why I am doing it,” Terence said in a video for Love Behind Walls.

Love Behind Walls is where Terence is sharing his journey on this walk to raise awareness for those who do not have a voice. So far, Terence has made it to Spencer, North Carolina! You can see more of his journey on the Love Behind The Walls Facebook page.

If you respect this man’s decision and dedication, you will also love this veteran and his horse walking 15 miles to show their support at a fellow veteran’s funeral.

Blind 16-Year-Old With Autism Rocks The National Anthem And Gains A Standing Ovation

The national anthem is something that we can all take pride in as Americans.

It’s sung at every sporting event for a reason. That reason being, respect for our freedom and the life that we’re able to live in America, the land of the free.

Whether you’re in agreement with the importance of the National Anthem or not, you can at least appreciate it in the slightest, when someone like the young girl below performs it the way she does.

Marlana VanHoose is a 16-year-old blind girl who happens to have autism. But the more important trait that she happens to have is her singing talent.

Having autism, and being blind, must be a struggle in her daily life. However, I don’t think that VanHoose is one to let anything get her down after hearing the strength in her voice.

She is shown in this video, belting out the national anthem, beautifully with no hesitation. She proves anyone’s first judgments wrong and inspires everyone in the crowd.

VanHoose has an amazing voice, and she should be shared everywhere for her amazing talent.

She reminded me of the young man with autism who also did America proud with his performance of the National Anthem at Fenway Park, and the boy with disabilities who made sure he tried to stand during the anthem, in his own home.

Everything about these brave young kids shows that disabilities are just that, a disadvantage, but nothing more. I’m in no way discounting the struggle they go through, but these kids are a great showing of how to overcome those disabilities and power through life.

They follow their dreams. And from the look of it, they achieve it all.

Please SHARE this great performance from a talented young woman, with everyone you know!

Boy Grows His Hair Out For Cancer Patients, He’s Unrecognizable After A Haircut

I will be the first one to admit that I believe that we, as adults, should pay much more attention to what we can learn from children.

They may be naive, but they’re blissfully intelligent in what they need to be: compassion.

More often than not, you see a child that is giving hugs, rather than hits.

The kids in the world are the ones who warm our hearts most with their non-judgment and non-prejudice love for all.

They’re the future of our world, and hopefully, we shape them all to be something like Thomas Moore.

Thomas Moore is a 10-year-old boy who decided to grow his hair out, and then cut it off, for kids with cancer.

He decided this after his mom had to explain to him why people with cancer sometimes lose their hair, and he clearly is a young man of his word.

Below, you can see that he did much more than ‘say’ those thoughts and decisions about his hair.

He followed through, far and beyond.

10-year-old Moore, before his hair became a long beautiful mane, saw his mom, Socue Soflien, watching Kyssi Andrews on Facebook.

Kyssi Andrews is a young girl who lost all of her hair due to chemotherapy treatments for her cancer diagnosis.

Thomas asked his mom why she lost her hair and she started to explain to him the process of chemo, and journey through cancer, and what they can both do to your body.

Thomas’s immediate reaction was saying that he was going to grow his hair long so that he could give it to Kyssi, and he did just that.

Here is not even the end result of all of his growing, he continued on after this and it became almost unmanageable according to his aunt!

In order to keep his hair in control, neat and clean, they put it into cornrows.

Still, just as handsome and selfless, he continues on with his journey to help others.

He kept growing his hair out until he finally thought it was enough to donate to those in need.

From short hair not leaving his head, to hair down past his shoulders, Thomas has proven that he can keep his word.

He did so much to make sure that this happened and that this hair was in great condition for whoever was going to get to use it, and his family probably did too.

I myself know that my hair is hard to manage, and it’s nowhere near as much as Thomas’.

Two entire years passed, and the day finally came that Thomas was ready to cut it off.

He had more than enough hair to help not one, but multiple people who lost their hair.

Unfortunately, the little girl that inspired him to do this amazing thing, has passed away.

But her legacy clearly lives on, and her inspiring Thomas, is a beautiful moment we can appreciate in her memory.

His amazing act of kindness has now gone viral, and a former NBA player, Derek Anderson decided to help give Thomas the real recognition he deserves. He is set to receive an ‘Act Of Kindness Award’ from the Stamina organization, run by Anderson.

He’ll be present, with his family, at Anderson’s gala on October 14th, and he will be given the award in front of everyone in attendance.

The transformation this adorable young boy went through for two entire years, in order to help others, is something that everyone can appreciate. He deserves this award coming to him, and much more.

If all kids were like Thomas Moore, the world might be a much simpler and happier place.

Please SHARE this great story if you agree that compassion is important to the world!

James Corden Flips Over Subway Singer’s Voice, Then Tracks Him Down To Sing On National TV

There are leagues of talented subway singers in New York City. And while most of them undoubtedly dream of being discovered, most of them never make it to the masses.

Mike Yung is one of the lucky few who can now say they’ve been discovered in the hustling, bustling underground subway system of Manhattan.

Recently, Yung was filmed singing “Unchained Melody” by the Righteous Brothers at the 23rd Street subway station. The clip went viral and caught the attention of late night TV show host and notorious music lover James Corden.

Corden was so impressed by Yung’s impromptu subway performance that he demanded the singer perform on his show, The Late Show With James Corden! In turn, Corden gave the unknown vocalist an opportunity to share his talent with the world — and Yung did not disappoint.

Like a seasoned professional, Yung recreated his viral performance of “Unchained Melody,” the classic song from 1965, and dazzled Corden’s audience. His voice is full of so much old-school soul, it’s almost like he stepped out from a different time.

I have a feeling we’ll be seeing a lot more of Mike Yung, and that’s definitely a good thing for music. How cool is it that he can thank the internet for shooting him to stardom?!

Please SHARE Yung’s inspiring success story and awesome performance with your friends on Facebook!

How spending time with grandkids can help grandparents stay healthy, happy, and sharp.

There's now scientific evidence that suggests kids spending time with their grandparents is good for their health.

After waking up to rooster crows and being treated to pancakes made from scratch, my grandmother would help me get dressed for our mini-adventures around town.

Some of my fondest memories are of that time spent out and about with my grandmother in Nogales, Mexico. Little did I know at the time, there were great health benefits to our time spent together, too.

Listen up, parents! Now there's scientific evidence suggesting quality time with the grandkids has incredible health benefits for both grandma and grandpa.

Photo by Norman Smith/Fox Photos/Getty Images.

For the first time ever, researchers looked at how grandparenting has an effect on cognition. The study — conducted by The Women's Healthy Aging Project in Australia  — observed 186 grandmothers who took care of their grandkids. The results were both surprising and awesome.

The study found that grandmothers who spent one day a week looking after their grandkids were more likely to offset dementia and had a lower risk of developing Alzheimer's. Apparently, keeping up with the kiddos and answering their sometimes endless questions helps keep their memory sharp by increasing their brain function. Way to go, kids!

The study also found that a healthy grandparent-grandkid relationship helps prevent social isolation, which can lead to depression and sometimes even an earlier death. So by spending more time with grandma or grandpa, you're actually helping to keep them sharp, healthy, happy, and maybe even extending their life.

There's also good news for grandkids.

Initial data from the Institute on Aging at Boston College show that a strong grandchild-grandparent bond can offset depressive tendencies for both parties.

The study, which observed 376 grandparents and 340 kids over a span of 19 years (from 1985 to 2004), found that the closer the grandparent-child relationship was, the less likely either was to experience depression. If that's not a major incentive to spend more quality time with Gramps, I don't know what is.

There is one drawback cited in this most recent study that could prove to be convenient when grandma doesn't want to commit to long-term babysitting.

While it's beneficial for grandparents to care for their grandkids one day a week, it's not beneficial to their health to watch them for five days or more per week. Researchers found hanging out with the rug rats too much may affect their grandparent's memory and their ability to process information faster, leading to lower cognition.

While most of us adore our grandparents, it's important we know how our interactions affect their health. While we may feel like we have all the energy in the world, they may not. We should be informed about how much time with the kids is OK and when it's best to relieve them of their grandparenting duties.

Fostering a fulfilling relationship between kids and their grandparents is a beautiful thing. Who better to teach kids about themselves and their family history? This relationship is crucial.

This study offers a win-win situation for parents who want their kids to build lasting, meaningful relationships with their grandparents. Hey, it could also be a great excuse for finally having that date night!

So parents, feel free to ask grandma and grandpa to watch the kids — and to feel good about it — because you're also helping to keep them sharp and healthy. But remember that, like in most things in life, everything is best in moderation.

The World's Largest Whale Sharks Are Disappearing

Scientists are spotting fewer of the biggest whale sharks in global oceans, but no one is sure why.

PHOTOGRAPH BY BRIAN J. SKERRY, NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC CREATIVE
You’d think finding something as big as a school bus would be a cinch.

But large whale sharks—the biggest fish in the sea—seem to have vanished from the world’s oceans, scientists say.

Until a decade ago, adult whale sharks measuring an awesome 43 to 49 feet (13 to 15 meters) plied warm waters from India to Belize.

Today these biggest of the big are seen only in the eastern Pacific, a new study says. Animals elsewhere average a mere 23 feet (7 meters) and under, which are small fry too young to breed. (Read more about the incredible lives of whale sharks.)

"Where are they?” marine ecologist Ana Sequeira of the University of Western Australia says of the big guys.

“We urgently need to know. ... We need to have the big mums and big dads to keep the species going," says Sequiera, who led a new study about the phenomenon.

But how whale sharks go about their business is a secret they keep to themselves.

Researchers still don’t know basic facts about the fish, such as its global population or why whale sharks gather in groups, called “coastal aggregations,” in shallower waters. (Related: "Secrets of Whale Shark Migration Revealed.")

Troubling Trend

Sequeira and her colleagues recently delved into the lives of whale sharks at western Australia's Ningaloo Reef, home to one of the world’s best-studied coastal groups.

After reviewing decades of observation data, the team found a troubling trend: The biggest animal spotted on the reef in the mid-1990s was 43 feet (13 meters long), but only 33 feet (10 meters) in the early 2000s, and an even more modest 26 feet (8 meters) a half-decade ago. (See amazing pictures of whale sharks worldwide.)

The average size of Ningaloo’s whale sharks also shrank. In the most recent study period, the animals averaged only 20 feet (6 meters) from snout to tip, the scientists report in this week’s Royal Society Open Science. That meant most of the sharks were just kids.

A search of whale-shark data from other sites turned up similar data.

Except for some big females recently recorded near the Galápagos and Mexico, most very large whale sharks were seen before 2008, the study found, and the sharks in coastal groups are mostly immature animals.

Sweating the Small Stuff

So why are they getting smaller?

It's possible the slow-growing animals, which live about 80 years, haven’t recovered from overfishing. Whale sharks are protected from hunting by some countries.

Or perhaps illegal or accidental kills are still jeopardizing the shark. In 2014, a nonprofit group provided evidence that a factory in southeastern China processes about 600 whale shark carcasses a year.

There are alternate explanations. Maybe whale shark gatherings have a youthful bias because big adults prefer to roam the deep ocean, says  Eric Hoffmayer, a research fishery biologist at the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. (See "Biggest Whale Shark 'Swarm' Found.")

Whale shark measurements from groups other than Ningaloo aren’t totally reliable, adds whale shark expert Simon Pierce, of the California-based Marine Megafauna Foundation.

That makes it difficult to draw conclusions about whale sharks worldwide. Sequeira agrees: With the big kahunas MIA, it’s impossible to say whether the species—listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature—is in serious decline.

But Pierce says other data from fisheries in Taiwan and mainland China suggest whale sharks have gotten smaller. And whale-shark sightings in several oceans have become less frequent.

“Whale sharks are definitely in a lot of trouble,” he says by email. “That's a valid take-home message.”

Apple to Release New MacBook Pro and Air as Early as October, AMD iMacs and 5K Display With LG Also in Works

Apple is planning to refresh its Mac lineup, including the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air, as early as October, according to Bloomberg. The report also claims Apple is working on a standalone 5K display in partnership with LG Electronics, while it plans to update iMac models with an option for new graphics chips from AMD.

The report reiterates that the new MacBook Pro will be thinner and include an OLED-based touchscreen strip along the top of the flatter keyboard, which will present functions that dynamically fit the current task or application, as well as integrate Touch ID to enable users to quickly log in using their fingerprint.
For example, if a user is on their desktop, the screen will show a virtual representation of the standard function row, which includes brightness and media controls. When in an application, the virtual row will show options specific to the task at hand, but volume controls and a switch to show the default functions will always be present.
Apple has reportedly named the feature "Dynamic Function Row" internally, but its official name may differ when announced.

The tweaked MacBook Air models, meanwhile, are said to include multipurpose USB-C ports, which makes the inclusion of Thunderbolt 3 a possibility. No other details were shared about the planned MacBook Air and iMac refreshes.

Apple's plans to work with LG on a standalone 5K display surface two months after it discontinued the five-year-old Thunderbolt Display. It remains unclear if the monitor will be based upon the Retina 5K iMac, and it is also unclear if the report's broad late 2016 timeframe for "some of the new Mac products" includes the display.

The report makes it nearly certain that the focus of Apple's just-announced September 7 media event will be on the iPhone 7 and the second-generation Apple Watch, the latter of which has now been confirmed for the event. Apple will also provide updates about its software, including iOS 10, macOS Sierra, watchOS 3, and tvOS 10.

Homeless Man Hasn’t Seen His Kids In 19 Years, Then His Son Walks Through The Door

It’s a simple program with a big impact — and it’s already changing the lives of people who are severely disadvantaged in our society. What happens when you give homeless people an opportunity to reach out to their lost loved ones?

“You know, my kids, I —” Perry Thornley starts, then stops, clearly overcome with emotion. “I can never find ‘em.”

This dad has been separated from his children for 19 years with no clue where they are, but it’s been virtually impossible for him to find them again. You see, Thornley lives on the street, but he’s about to meet a team of wonderful people who want to ensure he reunites with his lost family.

This program is called Miracle Messages, and it helps homeless people reconnect with their lost loved ones using social media. Kevin F. Adler, who heads up the proceedings, believes very strongly that “everyone is someone’s somebody,” according to the organization’s website.

The Through Our Eyes Project is similar in that volunteers provide homeless people with disposable cameras so that they can tell their unique stories. A filmmaker also hoped to spotlight the experiences of those living on the street through music, which produced a truly heartwarming dance routine.

In this video, however, you will not only get to witness the incredible moment Thornley is reunited with his son, but you’ll meet other people as well.

It’s the simple experience of getting to hear their stories that truly leaves the biggest impact.

Ethiopian marathoner makes protest gesture at Rio finish line

Feyisa Lilesa of Ethiopia may have turned himself into a political exile because of the way he won a silver medal in the Olympics marathon on Sunday.
He strode across the finish line with his arms crossed over his head in a sign of solidarity for the Oromo people, his native group and the largest ethnic group in Ethiopia. He repeated the sign at a press conference.

In an interview after the race, Lilesa said he wanted to draw attention to the government's ongoing persecution of the Oromos.
By speaking out, he said, he put himself into such danger that he can't go home.

"I really think that I would be killed," he said -- or imprisoned. Some of his family members are already in prison, he said, and he worries about the safety of his wife and two children.
Lilesa said he may stay in Brazil or go to Kenya or the United States, depending on whether he can obtain a visa for those moves.
It's unclear if his gesture with the arms will affect his medal. In the past, the Olympics committee has stripped athletes of their medals for political protests, as when American sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos gave the black power salute on the medal stand at the 1968 games.
The Oromo make up at least a third of Ethiopia's 100 million people. But they have been marginalized for decades, with tensions rising recently as the government promoted development that took over over Oromo farmland.

Huge protests by the Oromos have swept the streets of Ethiopia.
The government was brutal in putting down the demonstrations, nonprofit groups like Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch reported.
"In nine months, more than 1,000 people have been killed," Lilesa said on Sunday.
CNN could not immediately confirm this statement. Human Rights Watch said that since November, more than 400 people have been killed and tens of thousands arrested. Thousands more have been jailed.

"Human Rights Watch's research indicates that security forces repeatedly used lethal force, including live ammunition, to break up many of the 500 reported protests that have occurred since November 2015," the group reported on its website.
In response to the protests and the report from Human Rights Watch, Getachew Reda, Ethiopia's Minister of Communications, told CNN that the country's security response was standard police protocol to disperse "rioters." He also disputed the number of deaths.
Some of the protesters have been armed with guns and hand grenades, he added.

in a report on the Oromos, Amnesty International said at least 5,000 Oromos were arrested because of peaceful protests or opposition to the government between 2011 and 2014.
Lilesa won silver on Sunday with a time of 2:09:54, finishing behind liud Kipchoge of Kenya. He finished with a time of 2:08:44.

Matt Centrowitz One-Ups Olympian Dad, Wins Team USA's First 1,500m Gold Since 1908

By Karen Rosen

RIO DE JANEIRO – Matthew Centrowitz was not to be denied this time.

Four years after finishing fourth in London, he won the 1,500-meter at the Rio Olympic Games for the first U.S. gold medal in the event since Mel Sheppard in 1908.

Centrowitz led at every split, finishing in 3 minutes, 50 seconds flat, about 20 seconds off his personal best. He held off several challengers and ran a last lap of 50.62 seconds to edge Taoufik Makhloufi of Algeria, whose time was 3:50.11. Nicholas Willis of New Zealand was third in 3:50.24.

At the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Track and Field in July, Centrowitz had a final lap of 53.95 seconds.

A two-time Olympian like his father, Matt, Centrowitz said he was joking with his dad before the trials.

“He was a two-time Olympian and I am now,” Centrowitz said. “He can’t hold that over me. A cool stat is that his first team he made he got second and the second team he won (at the trials); just another step ‘like father like son.’”

But now the son has done better than the father.

The last Team USA athlete to medal in the event was Leo Manzano, who won the silver at the London 2012 Olympic Games, but did not make the U.S. team this year, finishing fourth at trials.

This Guy Somehow Managed To Create A Mini Nuclear Reaction In His Parents' Yard

You might not know the name David Hahn, but back in 1995, his fascination with nuclear power nearly triggered a radiological disaster in his Michigan hometown. As a teen, Hahn became fixated with the idea of building a nuclear reactor in his mother's backyard shed -- and he actually got pretty darn close to accomplishing it.

To amass the power needed for a nuclear reactor, Hahn took to scraping radioactive materials from common household items like smoke detectors. With his tools in hand, the kid began construction of his reactor. However, things did not go as planned (of course) and Hahn quickly tried to disassemble the reactor before it blew.
Despite not creating the reactor, Hahn still managed to contaminate his mother's yard with radiation. It was so bad, the EPA had to come clear it up. Here's a mini-documentary looking at Hahn's bizarre accomplishment.

That is absolutely insane. Sadly, after his brush with nuclear greatness, life hasn't been great for Hahn. Following a stint in the Navy and Marines, he was arrested in 2007. Police caught him trying to steal the smoke detectors in an apartment complex to amass more radioactive material for an unknown purpose.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me...

Teens try to hash out the perfect plan to ensure that the magical experience happens at the right place, time, and with Mr. or Mrs. Right. It wasn't all that long ago, though, that we thought boys and girls had cooties.

These two adorable kids have found a way to take all the stress out of their first kiss. The pair can be seen leaning in for multiple pecks on the lips, in between taking a moment to reflect (i.e. wipe the yucky germs off) and have a bit of a giggle fit.
This first kiss is one straight out of the movies.

What This Photographer Captured Over Phoenix Looks Like A Nightmare

Something magical and unexpected recently happened over the arid city of Phoenix, Arizona.

And a photographer managed to capture it all on film! Jerry Ferguson was in the right place at the right time when he saw a microburst open up over the city. What he captured and later shared with the internet truly showcases the wonder of Mother Nature and her awesome power.

There's luck, and then there's skill. As far as capturing this video is concerned, it probably took a bit of both. source : http://www.viralnova.com/phoenix-sky-nightmare/

Firefighter Saves An Abandoned Kitten That Was Shockingly Thrown From A Moving Car

Firefighter Sean Sweat was bringing his truck back to the fire station when he saw something on the side of the road that shocked him.

In the mud, he spotted a distressed kitten. But what sent chills down his spine were the visible road burns on the frightened cat, which let him know that the animal had been thrown from someone's vehicle.

The kitty was wet, covered in mud, and in need of some serious love. Sweat took the poor baby back to the fire station to clean her up and assess her wounds. After spending the night comforting the kitten at the station, he took her to the SPCA. Thanks to the observant and kindhearted firefighter, the kitten -- fittingly named Trouble -- is getting a second chance at life.

As an animal lover, I can't imagine how someone could ever do such a thing. It actually hurts my heart just thinking about it. Thank heavens for people who go above and beyond to help those in need. Polk firefighter saves kitten thrown from moving vehicle

15 Ways To Keep Your Produce Fresher Longer (And Save Lots Of Money)

When it comes to how I feel about buying and storing produce, I tend to identify with Jim Gaffigan spiritually.

In what is adulthood's truest test, humans are expected to buy roughly 136 pounds of produce a week to presumably eat said produce over the course of seven days, only to realize that cookies exist.

When Saturday rolls around and it's time to venture out to the grocery store, we must first purge our fridges of those fallen, leafy, rotten heroes that we once again neglected in favor of frozen pizzas and overall happiness.
Fortunately, the internet is a thing, and on it, you can find plenty of tips and tricks that'll help you keep your produce fresh for as long as possible. They won't make you actually ingest it, but you have to start somewhere.

1. Know which foods hate the fridge.

Know which foods hate the fridge.
iStock
Tomatoes, bell peppers, and cucumbers are not fans of the refrigerator. They'll actually get their slime on faster if you don't store them at room temperature.

2. Throw a paper towel into storage containers.

iStock
Moisture is your enemy, friends. Add a sheet of paper towel into containers holding things like berries to wick moisture away.

3. Don't wash fruits and veggies until you're about to use them.

Don't wash fruits and veggies until you're about to use them.
iStock
All those chefs over on the Food Network will tell you that to save time, you should wash your produce before storing it so you can just grab it and go when it's time to cook. In theory, that's awesome. However, stripping fruits and vegetables of natural oils and waxes can cause them to rot faster in storage.

4. Keep peeled vegetables in jars.

iStock
If you love baby carrots and stalks of celery that are cut into dip-friendly portions, store them in glass jars filled with water to up the longevity factor.

5. Wrap banana stems.

The gases that cause bananas to ripen quickly need to escape through the stem to work, so wrapping them in plastic wrap will slow things down.

6. Colder isn't always better. Become one with your fridge's produce drawers.

iStock
Those little drawers at the bottom of your refrigerator aren't just there for show. Storing produce on the shelves exposes them to temperatures that are just too cold and will have you chucking food in the garbage sooner.

7. Don't let ethylene play you.

iStock
Some fruits don't play well with others. Because bananas, plums, pears, apricots, and mangoes give off ethylene as they ripen, they can't be stored with other fruits that are sensitive to it. Keep apples, watermelons, and veggies like eggplants, carrots, and broccoli away from those in the former camp.

8. Potatoes and onions don't get along.

Potatoes and onions don't get along.
iStock
If you keep onions next to potatoes, the potatoes will be all, "Onions, I don't like you," and the onions will retaliate by growing nasty sprouts, making them inedible. Eat your onions, people. Don't let potatoes take them away.

9. Like me and bats, onions and garlic love the dark.

iStock
Sunshine is overrated. If you can't stuff onions and garlic into a deep, dark drawer all by themselves, get some paper bags, poke a few holes in them, and store these pantry staples wherever you want.

10. Apples are stand-up guys.

Having trouble keeping potatoes longer than a few days? (Then you clearly aren't me. They do not sit idle for long in my world.) Put a few apples in the mix to help them stay fresh.

11. Store asparagus like flowers.

You store bouquets in water, so do the same thing with asparagus to ensure that they hang around longer.

12. Make sure your fruits and veggies have a little airflow.

iStock
Your tightly-woven fruit basket is cute. It is not, however, good for your produce. Opt for baskets and crates that allow for airflow to keep things fresh.

13. Wrap celery in tinfoil.

iStock
Celery stalks usually come wrapped in plastic, but if you want them to maintain what little flavor they have, ditch the plastic and opt for tinfoil before putting them in the fridge.

14. Store tomatoes with the stalk up.

Store tomatoes with the stalk up.
iStock
A tomato rots fastest where the stalk was once attached to it, so store that part facing up.

15. Keep the pit in if you're storing halved avocados.

Keep the pit in if you're storing halved avocados.
iStock
Ah, we have returned to the almighty avocado. I love them. I love everything they stand for. I cannot store them, but this should help. If you only eat half of an avocado, eat the side without the pit and pop the side with it in a storage bag before letting it chill in the fridge. I will send this message along to Mr. Gaffigan.

Well, the moment of truth will come next week when I either beam with pride at my produce consumption or cry into the garbage can.

What Happened Live On The Air During This Show Is Beyond Disturbing

Demonic possession is a bit of a touchy subject. Some people believe 110 percent in demons and their ability to influence our lives. Others, however, think demons are just another form of fantasy and an excuse for people to indulge their superstitions. Whichever camp you fall into, when video of a supposed demonic possession surfaces, it's hard not be shocked by it. Take this video, for example...

In it, a Thai model by the name of Thippawan "Pui" Chaphupuang is being interviewed on a talk show. Everything is going fine until about 13 minutes into the interview. That's when she informs the hosts that she is possessed by a "pop," a cannibalistic spirit in Thai folkore. Pui then supposedly allows the demon to speak through her to the hosts...and well, things get creepy.

For those who can't speak Thai, one of the hosts asks the demon, "Why can't you leave her?" To which it replies, "Someone sent me here!" The demon then goes on to demand pig's blood, according to the translation.

Creepy, right?

When This Kitten Got Lonely, She Did The Cutest Thing To Get To Her Friend

As cute as that puppy is in the pet store window, there's a sad truth behind that glass.

If they weren't plucked from a terrible puppy mill, odds are, they weren't raised in much better conditions either. When they make it to the pet store, they're kept in tiny enclosures, very rarely getting to interact with other animals or humans.

But that doesn't mean they won't try their darndest to be around other fur friends. Take this one lonely kitten in a pet store in Taiwan.

When a puppy pal next door was presumably feeling down in the dumps, the cute kitten went to drastic measures to cheer him up.

These Bugs Will Haunt Your Nightmares...They're So Well Camouflaged, It's Scary

In the world of insects, you could make an argument for the praying mantis being the most majestic, even though it's a ruthlessly efficient hunter. These bugs make quick work of taking down anything that gets in their way, yet still have a certain beauty about them that's hard to find in other insects.

But just when you thought that the praying mantis couldn't get more majestic (or creepy), here comes the orchid mantis.

The orchid mantis (pictured below) is a species native to Southeast Asia. It has evolved to look like an orchid flower, as you might've guessed.

If you were quickly looking at one of these guys in their natural environment, you would never suspect that it was actually a mantis hunting for prey.

The orchid mantis uses its amazing natural camouflage to lure unsuspecting prey in close enough for a magnificent kill.

Getting Too Close To This Massive Sandstorm Was The Last Thing They Should Have Done

For those of us who don't live in or around deserts, it's almost impossible to imagine the intensity and sheer scale of a real sandstorm. These things, while not as famously terrifying as tornados, can reach massive sizes and wreak their own special brand of havoc. For proof, just take a look at the video below.

It features the crew of a big rig truck somewhere in China (likely the Gobi Desert). They were transporting a large piece of machinery when they came across a massive sandstorm. Instead of driving through it or turning around, they stopped, got out, and shot some video.
I'll agree that it looks pretty amazing, but I wouldn't want to be out in the open when one of these things rolled in.

No word on what happened to the men after their encounter with the sandstorm. Hopefully, they made it out of there in one piece.

Sugar tax: 5 simple ways to cut down

By Francesca Specter

Sugar is hitting headlines right now – here's how to cut down on your intake

Sugar has never so controversial. There is burgeoning pressure for the government to impose a sugar tax, with a report from Cancer Research UK and the UK Health Forum suggesting that it could prevent 4 million from becoming obese, saving the NHS £10 million a year.

Then, earlier this week, findings were released by charity Action On Sugar, that revealed some high street hot drinks contained as many as 20 teaspoons of sugar.

With 64 per cent of you backing the sugar tax*, it’s clear that we’re keen to cut down on our daily intake of the sweet stuff. We asked Philippa Askham, co-founder of Sweetpea Pantry, to give us her five tips in order to eat less sugar:

1 Ditch sugary drinks
Fizzy drinks offer scant, if any, nutritional value and, whilst fresh fruit juices contain vitamins and fibre, many commercial brands are real sugar bombs. Try and stick to fresh juices with a high veggie content, and flavour water naturally with citrus wedges and sprigs of fresh mint. Beware also of coffees and hot drinks with added syrups; you’d be amazed at how much sugar can be lurking in those cardboard cups!

2 Keep the kitchen ‘junk free’
Prepare for snack attacks by keeping your kitchen stocked with delicious, healthy treats. We love to munch on fresh veggie sticks or oatcakes with houmous or guacamole. Bowls of fresh fruit, toasted coconut slices and nuts look appealing, and are far more satisfying than sugary snacks. And of course a bit of dark chocolate always goes down well (85 per cent is best).

3 Know your labels
Sugar hides in surprising places: pasta and stir fry sauces, cereals and even bread all contain ‘hidden’ sugars. Check the nutritional content when buying processed food, and bear in mind that the NHS and WHO currently recommend adults stick to 6-7 tsp of sugar a day (30g maximum; 1 tsp of sugar equates to around 4.25g of sugar). Even a ‘healthy’ muffin can push you over your recommended daily limit.

4 Train your taste buds
People who give up sugar for a period of time are often amazed by how sweet things taste once they return to their normal foods. Adjust your palate by gradually making healthier switches to reduce your sugar intake. Mix your normal muesli with plain oats and nuts, go for chocolate with a higher cocoa content, try adding fresh fruit to natural yoghurt instead of buying high-sugar flavoured yoghurts, and switch to sugar free nut butters. If you’re used to having something sweet after meals then try a chunk of cheese instead, some herbal tea (peppermint and liquorice has a lovely natural sweetness to it), or warm milk flavoured with cinnamon and nutmeg.

5 Get cooking
The best way to ensure your food contains no hidden nasties is to make it yourself. The current focus on reducing sugar and showcasing fresh ingredients means the bookstores are full of inspiring recipe books. At Sweetpea Pantry, we help busy people ‘get the goodness in’ with mixes for healthier biscuits, sugar free flapjacks and pancakes and pizza dough. They are all free from refined sugars, contain ‘super powered’ ingredients like chia and flaxseeds, and there are gluten free options available, too.

In Silicon Valley, Obama to Keep Hot-Button Tech Issues off Agenda

In Silicon Valley, Obama to Keep Hot-Button Tech Issues off Agenda

by Reuters

President Barack Obama will head to Silicon Valley on Friday to a summit aimed at connecting about 1,200 entrepreneurs from 170 countries with the biggest and brightest players in the U.S. tech sector and venture capital community.

Hot-button political issues that the White House and tech sector normally grapple with, such as the use of social media by extremists, the desire by law enforcement for a way around encryption, and cyber security, will not be on the agenda.

Obama is using the summit - the seventh in a series which have reached a total of 17,000 people mainly in Muslim-majority countries around the world - to help bolster his foreign policy legacy as his time in offices draws closer to the end on Jan. 20, 2017.

The idea for the Global Entrepreneurship Summit series emerged from a speech Obama made in Cairo in 2009, which he used to signal he wanted to overhaul U.S. policy on the Middle East and try to repair the U.S. relationship with the Muslim world.

When he took office, Obama worked to extract U.S. troops from long and costly conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. But Syria's civil war and the rise of Islamic State militants in Syria and Iraq have tested his strategy.

Islamic State has used social media to attract followers. Some have become self-radicalized, including a man who killed 49 people and wounded 53 at a gay nightclub in Orlando earlier this month, and a married couple who killed 14 people in San Bernardino, California last year.

But Obama's focus on Friday will not be about using technology to counter violent extremism. Rather, it is about connecting entrepreneurs from emerging markets with each other, and with potential sources of capital, giving a lift to emerging markets and contributing to security, said Ben Rhodes, Obama's deputy national security adviser.

"We believe the United States needs to have affirmative values that we are promoting around the world, in addition to the efforts we do to counter terrorism," Rhodes told reporters.

"We wanted to discuss not just want we're against, but what we're for," Rhodes said.

Obama is set to make remarks on Friday at the summit, held at Stanford University, and be part of a panel discussion with Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg.

Obama will also do an interview with Zuckerberg on Facebook Live, and then talk with four entrepreneurs from around the world via Google, Rhodes said
