Sugar tax: 5 simple ways to cut down

By Francesca Specter

Sugar is hitting headlines right now – here's how to cut down on your intake

Sugar has never so controversial. There is burgeoning pressure for the government to impose a sugar tax, with a report from Cancer Research UK and the UK Health Forum suggesting that it could prevent 4 million from becoming obese, saving the NHS £10 million a year.

Then, earlier this week, findings were released by charity Action On Sugar, that revealed some high street hot drinks contained as many as 20 teaspoons of sugar.

With 64 per cent of you backing the sugar tax*, it’s clear that we’re keen to cut down on our daily intake of the sweet stuff. We asked Philippa Askham, co-founder of Sweetpea Pantry, to give us her five tips in order to eat less sugar:

1 Ditch sugary drinks
Fizzy drinks offer scant, if any, nutritional value and, whilst fresh fruit juices contain vitamins and fibre, many commercial brands are real sugar bombs. Try and stick to fresh juices with a high veggie content, and flavour water naturally with citrus wedges and sprigs of fresh mint. Beware also of coffees and hot drinks with added syrups; you’d be amazed at how much sugar can be lurking in those cardboard cups!

2 Keep the kitchen ‘junk free’
Prepare for snack attacks by keeping your kitchen stocked with delicious, healthy treats. We love to munch on fresh veggie sticks or oatcakes with houmous or guacamole. Bowls of fresh fruit, toasted coconut slices and nuts look appealing, and are far more satisfying than sugary snacks. And of course a bit of dark chocolate always goes down well (85 per cent is best).

3 Know your labels
Sugar hides in surprising places: pasta and stir fry sauces, cereals and even bread all contain ‘hidden’ sugars. Check the nutritional content when buying processed food, and bear in mind that the NHS and WHO currently recommend adults stick to 6-7 tsp of sugar a day (30g maximum; 1 tsp of sugar equates to around 4.25g of sugar). Even a ‘healthy’ muffin can push you over your recommended daily limit.

4 Train your taste buds
People who give up sugar for a period of time are often amazed by how sweet things taste once they return to their normal foods. Adjust your palate by gradually making healthier switches to reduce your sugar intake. Mix your normal muesli with plain oats and nuts, go for chocolate with a higher cocoa content, try adding fresh fruit to natural yoghurt instead of buying high-sugar flavoured yoghurts, and switch to sugar free nut butters. If you’re used to having something sweet after meals then try a chunk of cheese instead, some herbal tea (peppermint and liquorice has a lovely natural sweetness to it), or warm milk flavoured with cinnamon and nutmeg.

5 Get cooking
The best way to ensure your food contains no hidden nasties is to make it yourself. The current focus on reducing sugar and showcasing fresh ingredients means the bookstores are full of inspiring recipe books. At Sweetpea Pantry, we help busy people ‘get the goodness in’ with mixes for healthier biscuits, sugar free flapjacks and pancakes and pizza dough. They are all free from refined sugars, contain ‘super powered’ ingredients like chia and flaxseeds, and there are gluten free options available, too.

Kids are inherently curious. Sometimes that curiosity leads to discoveries...but whether or not they're enjoyable ones depends entirely on the situation.

Take this little girl...

While out helping water in the garden, the little lady probably thought that it'd be a good idea to get a fresh drink from the hose.

Watch how she reacts when the water actually comes on...

In Silicon Valley, Obama to Keep Hot-Button Tech Issues off Agenda

In Silicon Valley, Obama to Keep Hot-Button Tech Issues off Agenda

by Reuters

President Barack Obama will head to Silicon Valley on Friday to a summit aimed at connecting about 1,200 entrepreneurs from 170 countries with the biggest and brightest players in the U.S. tech sector and venture capital community.

Hot-button political issues that the White House and tech sector normally grapple with, such as the use of social media by extremists, the desire by law enforcement for a way around encryption, and cyber security, will not be on the agenda.

Obama is using the summit - the seventh in a series which have reached a total of 17,000 people mainly in Muslim-majority countries around the world - to help bolster his foreign policy legacy as his time in offices draws closer to the end on Jan. 20, 2017.

The idea for the Global Entrepreneurship Summit series emerged from a speech Obama made in Cairo in 2009, which he used to signal he wanted to overhaul U.S. policy on the Middle East and try to repair the U.S. relationship with the Muslim world.

When he took office, Obama worked to extract U.S. troops from long and costly conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. But Syria's civil war and the rise of Islamic State militants in Syria and Iraq have tested his strategy.

Islamic State has used social media to attract followers. Some have become self-radicalized, including a man who killed 49 people and wounded 53 at a gay nightclub in Orlando earlier this month, and a married couple who killed 14 people in San Bernardino, California last year.

But Obama's focus on Friday will not be about using technology to counter violent extremism. Rather, it is about connecting entrepreneurs from emerging markets with each other, and with potential sources of capital, giving a lift to emerging markets and contributing to security, said Ben Rhodes, Obama's deputy national security adviser.

"We believe the United States needs to have affirmative values that we are promoting around the world, in addition to the efforts we do to counter terrorism," Rhodes told reporters.

"We wanted to discuss not just want we're against, but what we're for," Rhodes said.

Obama is set to make remarks on Friday at the summit, held at Stanford University, and be part of a panel discussion with Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg.

Obama will also do an interview with Zuckerberg on Facebook Live, and then talk with four entrepreneurs from around the world via Google, Rhodes said

She Does Stunts On 'Supergirl,' But This Proves That She Has Real-Life Powers

As someone who gets winded walking up the stairs, I deeply admire athletes.

And as someone with a serious binge-watching problem, I admire athletes who also happen to perform stunts on hit TV shows even more. You might not know Jessie Graff's name, but if you've watched "Supergirl" on CBS, you've definitely seen her work.

This stuntwoman and all-around force to be reckoned with recently broke a record at the qualifiers for "American Ninja Warrior" by becoming the first woman to conquer the show's new Warped Wall obstacle.

If seeing her in action isn't girl power at its finest, then I don't know what is.

Rescuers Came Across This Sight When They Found A Dog Tied Up In The Texas Floods

Recently, people across Texas were forced to evacuate due to terrible flooding of the Brazos River. Although residents across the state were warned of the flooding days before, some may not have received the message, and others probably hoped their property could withstand the storm. Whatever the reason, many family pets were left behind to fend for themselves.

Rescuers came across a horrible sight when they found one dog left tied to the ground while rising flood waters nearly drowned the poor pooch. Luckily, he was rescued just in time and was bought back to the safety of a nearby animal shelter.

It's hard for us to know why exactly this poor dog was left to fend for himself during the disaster. As much as we might want to villainize the owners, we have no idea what situation the heavy flooding put them in. We can, however, feel very relieved that this sweet pooch was rescued in the nick of time.

Small Choices, Big Impact

By Akanksha Agrawal

Of late I have been attending a lot of spiritual programs. The core emphasis of these discourses is that this life is temporary and at anytime we may have to leave this abode. So while we are living we must prepare and channelize are actions to deserve a glorious death. Most of these discourses encourage a habit to simplify life and plan ahead. These teachings inculcate in us the habit of being more responsible person. After attending these seminars I feel that life is a celebration and should be lived that way. Pure celebration comes with discipline and sense control. One can celebrate life by eliminating or churning out worries from our lives. Worries can be eliminated by acceptance of the inevitable and counteracting the avoidable stressful situations of life.

Insurance is such a tool devised to thwart the financial impact of any such contingencies or stressful situations in life. People who are winners in life are always understood to be as good planners. They foresee the future and formulate action plans accordingly. Since I am attending these programs I am trying to bring lots of positive changes in my life. I am trying to take as much control of my life as possible. In these discourses I also learnt that our own attitude towards the problem defines the magnitude of that problem.

Now I would like to be less preachy here. Among the many things that I am trying to change in my life in recent times is calculating what all and how much insurance policies I must have to ensure maximum protection of me and family, of course keeping in mind my budget. In my search I found that the top two essential insurance policies that a family holder must have is term insurance and family health insurance.

Here in this article I would emphasis more on term plan as unlike health insurance plans many people have ambiguity about it.

A term insurance policy basically aims at replacing the income of the earning person of the family. In the event of death of the breadwinner of the family the impact is double edged. Apart from the fact that the family is emotionally shattered a huge financial burden also befalls their shoulders. In most cases the family members have to lessen their standard of living. The adolescents may have to start work earlier and may have to sacrifice on higher studies. But if the person had taken term insurance plan and he/she dies in that stipulated term the nominees of the policyholder get a pre agreed amount called the sum assured at the time of death. This sum assured is generally twenty times the current annual income of the policy proposer (the bracket may change according to age and health condition). With attractive tax benefits under section 80 C and 10(10)D of the Income Tax Act,1961 these term plans also come with various useful features depending upon insurer companies.

Thus, I would advise you all to compare first before just buying. It is always favorable to get more and more number of quotes from different companies to get the best deal. Don't just go for the companies you hear of from friends or whose advertisement you see most on TV. To get a fair and unbiased comparison you may take help of various specialized insurance comparison portals available online. According to studies, people have saved significantly when they have purchased insurance plans after comparing on these portals or service provider websites.

There are many comparison websites today which gives good and relevant information on various insurance plans from different companies. One of them is http://www.easypolicy.com. You can get live quotations on term insurance policy with telephonic assistance from their team.

1 dead in crash near China Grove

CHINA GROVE, N.C. -- State Highway Patrol investigators say a woman was speeding when she caused a head-on crash near China Grove that killed the driver of a classic car and severely injured his passenger.

Around 2 Monday afternoon, investigators say the driver of a small Honda sedan was traveling south on Old Concord Road when she left the road and nearly drove into a ditch.

A man mowing his lawn says he saw the woman overcorrect to avoid the ditch and crashed head-on into a couple driving in the opposite direction.

The man behind the wheel was killed on impact. His passenger was airlifted to the hospital. As of Monday evening, that passenger was in very serious condition.

The driver of the sedan was alert and walking around after the crash, investigators say. She was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Investigators say it appears the woman was traveling at 65 to 70 miles per hour. The speed limit on that road is 55. Charges are likely, a spokesperson says.

The victims' names have not been released, however, a spokesperson on scene says the driver who was killed lived right up the road from the crash site.

He was driving a classic Chevy Impala, which was towed away from the scene, totaled.

A spokesperson says the victim was well-known in his community.

Woman raped leaving Montford Drive bars

Woman raped leaving south Charlotte hot spot

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Police are looking for the suspect responsible for a vicious attack. A Charlotte woman was walking home from a popular weekend hangout when she was assaulted.

"I'm terrified," said Laura Freeman. "It's what, three minutes from South Park Mall?"

According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, early Sunday morning a 27-year-old woman was walking home from the bars on Montford Street. Police say that's when they say the assailant assaulted her.  The suspect dragged her by her hair and strangled her with his hands, then raped her.

"Well, I just heard it from a friend and I was just surprised because it seems like a very safe area," said Samantha Miller.

Since January 1, there have been more than two dozen burglaries and about 32 assaults in a three-block radius of the area. However, before Saturday's sex crime there wasn't a single sex assault.

"Worked down the street at restaurants," said Freeman.

Freeman is a Montford regular. She's usually there at least once a week.

"It's terrifying in general; it's been around for forever; it's not a comfortable feeling at all," said Freeman.

Lightning May Have Caused Fatal Train Crash

Three people were killed and nine injured in Belgium after two carriages were "destroyed" by the high-speed impact.

A crash between a passenger train and freight train that killed three people could have been caused by lightning, Belgium's train operator has said.

Belgian officials said the train slammed into the back of the goods train, as it was travelling at around 55mph (90kmph) on the same track.

The Belga news agency reported that several passengers had to be extracted from the wreckage following the "very violent" collision, which derailed two of the passenger train's six carriages.

Nine people were hospitalized, some in critical condition, and the death toll could rise, said local mayor Francis Dejon.

A further 27 people were being cared for. The number of injured was originally said to be 40 - roughly the total number on board.

A spokesman for Infrabel, a company that oversees Belgium's rail infrastructure, said installations in the area where the wreck occurred "were hit by lightning" earlier on Sunday.

"It's an element we're going to have to look at, but it's premature to see this as the cause of the accident," spokesman Frederic Sacre said.

"Prosecutors are at the scene, so we're not able to have access until their work is done."

SNCB's Twitter account on Sunday reported "a signals disruption" on the rail line about an hour and a half before the wreck occurred, but said the problem had been solved and normal train service restored.

Emergency services and reinforcements took three hours to free people from the wreckage and remain at the site of the crash, where a crisis centre has also been set up.

The train was travelling from the west to the east of Belgium on the Namur-Liege line when the accident occurred in the municipality of Saint-Georges-sur-Meuse at 9pm (11pm local time).

Mr Dejon, mayor of Saint-Georges-sur-Meuse, said: "The passenger train is really in a bad way, it's stunning.

"The front carriage is scrunched back up on itself. We were very lucky not to have more victims," he told the Belgian news agency Belga.

"Two of the six carriages derailed and are lying on the tracks," Infrabel and the National Railway Company of Belgium (SNCB) said in a joint statement.

A person who had been on board described the scene as "chaos" to the local daily newspaper L'Avenir, saying that the front two carriages had been destroyed.

The circumstances of the accident were not immediately clear, with questions remaining over whether the passenger train was able to brake before the crash.

"The priority is to care for the victims," Infrabel and SNCB said, but added that information was already being analysed to determine how the crash took place.

In February 2010, 18 people were killed and 95 injured when two trains collided in a Brussels suburb in one of Europe's deadliest railway accidents of the past decade.

More recently, one person was killed and nearly 50 injured when a train carrying highly toxic chemicals derailed and exploded near the city of Ghent in May 2013.

Woman Becomes Second in Week to Die From Shark Attack in Australia

A woman who died after a shark attack on Australia's western coast Sunday became the second person to fall victim to a shark in the area in less than a week.

Police received a report that a woman had been found injured in the water off of Mindarie Sunday morning local time, and those who brought the woman to shore reported sighting a shark in the area, according to the Government of Western Australia's "Shark Smart" website.

The woman's injuries are consistent with a shark attack, and while "the cause of the injuries are yet to be confirmed," the Western Australia Department of Fisheries is treating the incident as a fatal shark attack, the government said.

"Given the nature of the injuries and the location of the incident, it is likely that a large white shark, greater than 3 meters (nearly 10 feet) in size is responsible," the government said in a statement.

The City of Wanneroo, where Mindarie is located, has closed the beach.

The Western Australia Department of Fisheries set up traps near where the woman was attacked, but nothing was caught Sunday, according to the government statement. "The department will re-set capture gear at sunrise tomorrow, given there has been a determination that a serious threat to public safety exists," the statement said.

The attack was the second fatal shark incident in Western Australia in less than a week. A male surfer's leg was bitten off Tuesday by a shark in the waters of Mandurah, about 60 miles from Wanneroo. Ben Gerring, 29, died in the hospital from his injuries on Friday, according to The Associated Press.

A nearly 14-foot-long white shark was captured near the area of that attack on Wednesday afternoon, according to the Western Australia's Shark Smart site.

Stanford sexual assault: Brock Turner's father sparks outrage

The father of a Stanford University student convicted of sexual assault has sparked outrage on social media by saying his son should not have been jailed for "20 minutes of action".

Brock Turner, 20, was sentenced to six months in jail for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman last year.

The victim's impact statement, which was read out in court, was also widely shared on social media.

The judge expressed concern about the impact of prison on Turner.

Prosecutors said that in January 2015, Turner had been seen by two witnesses sexually assaulting the woman, who was lying on the ground, unconscious, on the Stanford campus.

They said Turner had tried to run away when challenged by the witnesses, but the pair had tackled him and held him until police officers arrived.

A former top swimmer at the university, Turner was found guilty in March of three felony charges. Prosecutors wanted a sentence of six years in state prison for him, the Mercury News reported.

His sentencing, to six months and probation, also required him to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

In an excerpt of a statement to the court before the sentencing, Brock's father, Dan, said his son's life had been "deeply altered forever".

A Girl Cut In Front Of This Guy In Line, So He Did Something Drastic In Retaliation

Have you ever stood in line and felt the unique wrath that comes along with being cut? Same. It's the worst.

But the way this guy retaliated against a woman's questionable grasp on etiquette is a little ridiculous. Filmed by a security camera at the registration desk of a hospital in Yekaterinburg, Russia, this video shows the moment when a young woman forces her way to the front of a huge line.

That's when the man behind her seized the opportunity to exact some revenge by sneakily reaching into her bag and stealing 1,000 rubles (about $15).

Two wrongs don't make a right, but at least he didn't take too much. I mean, he could've kept the wallet and taken her phone, too. Still, that's a shady move! I guess he really does believe that time is money.

Remember This The Next Time You're At The Beach...The Clams Are Always There

Most people don't think much of clams...they're small, delicious creatures that we're more used to eating than observing in nature.

However, that doesn't mean the mollusks aren't occasionally fascinating and maybe just a little bit creepy. Take this video from 2012, for example.

The YouTuber was staying on Topsail Island in North Carolina when one day he went to the beach early, just as the tide was coming in. As the waves washed up, he witnessed thousands of small coquina clams emerging from the sand just in time for each new wave. Coquina clams are filter feeders, and they take in sea water, eat the small organisms in it, and then spit the water back out.

This is almost mesmerizing to watch.

That is unreal...and just a bit creepy, if I'm being honest. But still, nature is an amazing thing.

Ducklings Stuck Down A Storm Drain Get Rescued As Their Concerned Mom Looks On

Do You Think Mother Of Boy Who Fell Into Gorilla Enclosure Should Be Punished?

by Stephen-Kersey
The mother of the boy whose fall at the Cincinnati Zoo led to the death of 17-year-old gorilla Harambe has broken her silence about the incident that left people across the globe outraged.

Michelle Gregg took to Facebook in an attempt to silence the critics that have blamed her negligence for Harambe's untimely demise.

“As a society we are quick to judge how a parent could take their eyes off their child and if anyone knows me I keep a tight watch on my kids,” Gregg wrote. “Accidents happen, but I am thankful that the right people were in the right place today. Thank you to everyone that helped me and my son today and most importantly God for being the awsome [sic] God that He is.”

Gregg has since deleted the post, and many social media users are convinced that she should be blamed. “I'm wondering if CPS is involved,” one woman wrote. “They definitely should be! I read he was released from the hospital, hopefully not back into her hands!”

A Facebook page called Justice for Harambe received nearly 100,000 likes in the 36 hours since its creation. A number of petitions – including one on Change.org called “Have CPS investigate Michelle Gregg” with nearly 35,000 signatures – have also begun to circulate.

It seems that the court of public opinion has decisively sided with Harambe.
